The government of Uganda is going to distribute hundreds of the ecological sanitation (eco-san) toilets to farmers and people living in slums.
The Minister of State for Water, Jennifer Namuyangu says the move will improve on sanitation and promote agriculture. He says the farmers will use human waste as a fertilizer.
Addressing journalists in Bbiina, a Kampala suburb, Namuyangu said the farmers and other citizens will get Eco-san toilets at 200,000 shillings.
The cost of Eco San toilets has reduced from 2,000,000 million shillings to 200,000 shillings. Namuyangu says this is due to the availability of local materials to construct the eco-san toilets.
She says the government of Uganda wants by the end of 2015 to the use of Eco San toilets to have moved from 1% to about 15% countrywide.
The Minister says ECO San toilets separate faeces from urine. She says urine is a good fertiliser because it contains nutrients.
Namuyangu says nutrients helps plants to grow. She says Eco San toilets do not smell, contaminate water channels like flush toilets and have capacity of tripling agricultural production.
