The Member of Parliament for Lira Municipality, Jimmy Akena has praised his late father, Mze Apollo Milton Obote, describing him as a nationalist and a hero whom Uganda will continue to miss all times.

Although Akena’s mother (Miria Nakitto) is a Muganda and Obote ordered the attack of the Kabaka's Palace in Kampala, the MP says he doesn’t see any mistake his father committed apart from delivering good services.

MP Akena says his father sold Uganda to the international community. He says Obote was the first African to be a member of the Commonwealth. The MP for Lira Municipality was addressing journalists at the headquarters of Uganda Peoples Congress in Kampala.

He says his late father educated Ugandan students of his time for free including president Museveni. The MP says Obote died a poor man because he never condoned corruption in his government.

Obote died of kidney failure in South African hospital on October 10, 2005. He had lived in exile in Zambia for 20 years after fleeing the country when late Tito Okello Lutwa and his garrison captured his government.
